(THE PICKET)—Internet access is slowly returning to Shepherd University dorms after a plan by Information Technology Services to improve service ran into delays.
Two weeks into the fall semester, students are falling behind as Internet access in dorms is sporadic or nonexistent. Some service opened on a few floors Tuesday, Sept. 8, but most dorm students are forced to trek to the library for Internet access.
Elizabeth Sechler, the director of residence life, sent out an email on Sept. 4 that said residence life and the Information Technology Services would be working together to provide access to the Internet. According to the email, during the week of Sept. 8 through the 11, a staff member from Information Technology Services will work to enable the Internet in the dorms.
During the two weeks without Internet, students struggled to keep up to date with their assignments.
“I wasn’t able to do any homework or assignments for two weeks which made it really difficult, because a lot of my homework was online. Now, because of the Internet, I’m behind on my online assignments,” said Rachel Adams, a family and consumer science major.
Many students that have opted to do their homework in the library, but they would rather work in their own rooms.
“I have absolutely no Wi-Fi to use to do work in my room, and I can’t even get onto my phone because there isn’t any service. I have to walk to the library just to get something done. It would be a lot easier and save me time if I could just do work in my room,” said Angelica Scott, a nursing major.
“The Internet going on and off is really frustrating. I have to go to the library when I’m trying to do work, because the Internet keeps shutting off. It really makes it harder for class,” said Rebecca Miller, a nursing major.
Modern children can’t imagine their education without Internet. Even homework tasks are given through Internet, e-mails and social networks, not talking about preparation to classes and homework help that students also get online.
