Gold Finishes Third at MEC Championships

Shepherd University’s golf team ended the season with a third place finish at the Mountain East Conference Championship at the Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.

The team took the course for three days, Oct. 14-16, and impressed, finishing behind Concord University, which finished first all three rounds, and West Liberty. The team shot 91 over par with West Liberty hitting +87 and Concord shooting +73.

Wind plagued the golfers throughout the tournament, causing their numbers to rise higher than usual. After placing second on the first day, the Rams dropped to third on the following two, and were able to retain their lead ahead of the University of Charleston by one stroke to finish the tournament in third place.

The team was led by Joey Burkinshaw, who tied for seventh overall, with Chris Ferrell and Robert Fleming both tying for ninth. Will Holmes came in 29th and Brandon Dang ended in 41st.

This was the final tournament of the season. The Rams saw improvement from their last time out, where they took eighth in the MEC Fall Classic.

The season started with a ninth place finish at the Hal Hansen Invitational, and was followed up at Glade Springs Intercollegiate Golf Championship where they placed 13th.

One of the major highlights of the season was at the following tournament, the Shenandoah University Invitational. The team finished second overall and saw Joey Burkinshaw claim medalist honors, and was shortly after named MEC player of the week.

Coach Ed Dolan was pleased with the result and said, “With all of our current players returning, we are looking forward to the spring season.”
