FOOTBALL RECAP: Rams Shutout Southern Connecticut Owls in Football Opener, first since 2021

The Shepherd University Football Team began their season with a 23-0 shutout against the Southern Connecticut Owls on Sept. 5, their first shutout since 2021. 

The Rams defense held the Owls to only 179 total yards, with the offense reaching a total of 400 offensive yards, with a number of Rams who were vital in the sweep. 

Redshirt Senior Running Back Malakai Brown led the Rams with a game-high of 163 rushing yards with a 55-yard run he took to the endzone making him the PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week. Grad-student Running Back Grant Swinehart was also a threat on the ground as he had 14 carries for 88 yards. 

Redshirt Junior Lek Powell was a threat in the air as he went 11-19 for 130 yards and two touchdowns. His top target was Junior Wide Receiver Cameron Dorner who had two catches for 51 yards with an additional 16 yards on the ground. 

On the defensive side of the ball, Redshirt Junior Defensive-Back Klayton Batten led the Rams with eight total tackles. The guy who was all over the field for the defense was Sophomore Defensive Back Miles Greer who had six total tackles, one tackle for loss and a sack. 

The Rams will continue to play every weekend till Nov. 16
