We are beginning our series on featured student blogs by kicking off with a recent Shepherd alum, Anna Brammeier.
Anna graduated with a B.A. in English (Creative Writing) and is currently a surgical assistant at a periodontic practice in Martinsburg, WV. She writes poetry whenever she can and hopes to build a catalog large enough to become published professionally.

I flinched
as he let go of the plate
(a Corelle plate)
“you have to drop it
so that it hits just the right
spot” he said.
“I was testing it,” he said.
but I didn’t believe him
& I sat
on the floor, the
floor spread with
shards of milk glass pieces
of plate—is it you, Jane?
it’s never Jane
(and always Jane)
and how many figments
—fragments, I meant
I’m angry
spitting words like teeth—
did you throw away?
descendants that number
more than there are grains of sand
and stars stuck like pins
in the sky, saith the Lord
I didn’t believe him
the sand ran
through my fingers
floating upandupandup
to turn the constellations into
recursive versions of themselves
armsandlegsandheads
bent at right angles
in the wrong direction
Orion has a mouth
made of pinking shears
I don’t want to be poisoned
check the chicken
I can smell the pink
