In the wake of an attempted sexual assault Sunday night behind Shaw Hall, Shepherd University Student Government Association will discuss better lighting and other safety improvements during tonights meeting at 5 p.m. on the third floor of the student center, according to Graham Scott, SGA vice president.
“We will reach out to the student senate at our SGA meeting this evening for debate on this idea and any others that can improve the safety of our campus,” Scott said.
According to Scott, if the lighting proposal or any safety improvements receive considerable support from the senate, it will be presented to the appropriate administrative body.
“…whether that be the building and grounds committee or directly to (Shepherd University) President Shipley. We have a great adviser in Dr. Segar, so I’m confident that we will be able to enact the necessary changes,” Scott said.
In a statement released Monday evening Scott condemned the attempted assault and said more lighting is needed.
“The Student Government Association condemns this horrific occurrence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim, and to all victims of sexual assault. There is a lack of lighting where the incident occurred, and we will strongly lobby for additional lighting in that area. The safety of our students is, and always will be a top priority of the Student Government Association,” Scott said.
A Shepherd University student reported being grabbed from behind by a man Sunday evening who threw her to the ground and attempted to reach under her clothes. After a brief struggle she managed to scream for help and the suspect ran away. He was described as a male in his mid-20s with tan skin and wearing dark jeans.
University officials posted releases on the University website (http://www.shepherd.edu/emergency) Monday saying that police presence on campus had been increased. Officials also said that no arrests had been made.
The Shepherdstown Police Department and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department are assisting Shepherd University police, with this on going investigation.
