Concord edges out Shepherd women’s basketball

Rams were narrowly defeated when they played at Concord in Athens, WVA on Saturday.

Shepherd hung tight throughout the entire game. At the end of the first quarter Rams were winning 22-18. They lost the lead by half time when they were down 40-46. The Mountain Lions dominated the third quarter 72-60. The Rams fought back with all they had to win the fourth quarter, outscoring Concord 26-18. Shepherd cut the Concord lead to a point at 87-86 after a pair of free throws by Moorman with 1:23 remaining, but Kylie Molisee sunk three free throws down the stretch to seal the win for Concord.

The Rams lost 86-90, giving them a 5-15 record overall and 4-10 in the Mountain East Conference.

Sophomore guard Morgan Arden led the Rams with a game-high 28 points. She hit on 11-28 field goals with a 4-of-10 effort from beyond the arc. Arden was 2-of-3 from the foul line. She also added four assists and a pair of steals.

Freshman guard Kristen Nunn tossed in 16 points while freshman forward Elizabeth Moorman had four points, a career-high eight rebounds, and a game-high six blocked shots.

Sophomore guard Tiffany McKinney scored a career-high 15 points and grabbed six boards, while junior guard Cara Mason added 14 points and a game-high five assists.

The Rams connected on 41.7 percent (30-72) from the floor with a 31.8 percent (7-22) performance from three-point range. Shepherd hit on 86.4 percent of their free throws (19-22). Concord hit on 48.4 percent (31-64) of its field goals with a 44.4 percent (4-9) effort from beyond the arc. The Mountain Lions were successful on 85.7 percent (24-28) of their free throws.

Concord had a 42-33 rebounding advantage. The Rams forced 14 turnovers and committed 12.

The Rams take the court on Thursday when they host Wheeling Jesuit at 5:30 p.m.
