Student’s may have noticed a new railing behind the Robert C. Byrd Science and Technology Center this semester.
The railing was designed by recent art graduate Erin Bennett and was installed over summer break 2016. The metal railing is made of scrap steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and is completely sustainable.
Christian Benefiel, assistant professor of art, had her advanced sculpture class compete for the bid of the railing. Students had to design a railing that was sustainable, met code, and stayed within budget. A committee of representatives from the environmental science and art departments, the town, and building and grounds chose Bennett for the project, according to the Shepherd University web page.
