SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va., – Abby Beeman and Sydney Clayton of the Shepherd women’s basketball team were announced as the PSAC East offensive and defensive players of the week.
Head coach Jenna Eckleberry thinks it means a lot to the team to have two players recognized in the same week.
“It also shows how well we are playing right now,” Eckleberry said. “Both Abby and Sydney would be the first to say they wouldn’t have been able to accomplish the awards if it wasn’t for their teammates.”
Beeman, a freshman from Ridgely, West Virginia, was honored with offensive player of the week.
“It feels great to win player of the week,” Beeman said. “But it feels even better to have had two great team wins.”
Beeman’s standout performance came on Thursday against Lincoln University where she scored 29 points. She was an astounding 7-of-11 from three-point range and collected four steals.
The Rams defeated Lincoln 77-72 in an overtime thriller.
In the Rams’ 94-84 win against Davis and Elkins College, Beeman racked up 11 assists and added three steals. She scored 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
Clayton, a junior from Frederick, Maryland, won defensive player of the week. She had seven blocked shots, with five of them coming against Lincoln. She also recorded a double-double in that game, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
“I’ve always wanted to be player of the week since I was a freshman,” Clayton said. “To finally achieve it now feels great.”
Although she was honored for her defense, Clayton was still an offensive force in the win against Davis and Elkins. She put up an efficient 28 points going 12-of-16 from the field.
The 4-0 Rams will face Frostburg State University in their next game. It will be played at 7:00 on Wednesday in the Butcher Center.
