While many students were vacationing and relaxing during the spring recess, the Shepherd University Softball team was busy competing at two softball tournaments however the Ram’s continued to struggle as they won only four games and dropped six during that period. With about half of the regular season complete, the Rams find themselves ranked 8th in the WVIAC softball standings and have an overall record of 7-13.
On March 11th, the Rams traveled to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to take part in the NCSI Sports Invitational. In first day of competition at the event the Ram’s defeated Glenville State 8-0 in the early game however in the nightcap they fell to Tusculum College 8-0. Senior pitcher Tiffany Biggs played memorably in the early game, as she managed to throw a rare no-hitter against Glenville.
Sophomore outfielder Tayler Schaefer, sophomore first baseman Savannah Snyder, junior shortstop Jess Mason and freshman third baseman Kass Taylor each had two hits for Shepherd while junior outfielder Alysha Voytell led off the fifth inning with a solo homerun.
In the second day of competition at the NCSI Sports Invitational the Ram’s played poorly as they lost to Ohio Valley 6-3 and Tusculum 8-3.
In the first inning of the early game, Ohio Valley jumped out to a 3-0 lead off three hits and two errors. Shepherd succeeded in tying the game in the second inning due to a two run single by senior outfielder Bianca Biondillo and an RBI-single from Tayler Schaefer. In the third inning, Ohio Valley responded by batting in three runs to retake the lead for the final time.
In the nightcap, the Rams were led by sophomore outfielder Shanan Plunkett who went 3-for-4 and Savannah Snyder who had a two-run homer.
The Ram’s found success in the final day of the NCSI Sports Invitational as they decidedly defeated Arcadia 12-2 and Ohio Valley 9-0.
On March 15th, the Rams traveled to Salem, VA to compete in the Salem Tournament. Alyssa Smith, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, lead Lock Haven to the 6-1 victory over Shepherd in the early game.
In the nightcap, the Rams took an early 2-0 lead off a two run single by Kass Taylor and eventually claimed the 6-1 win over Millersville. Alysha Voytell and Bianca Biondillo helped increase the Shepherd lead to 6-0 with a two-run double and an RBI-double respectively.
On the second day of play at the Salem Tournament, the Rams fell to Mercyhurst 10-8 and Kutztown 10-2.
The Shepherd University Softball team will return to action at home when they play Salem International March 22nd at 2:00 PM.
