Shepherdstown is Ripe for Thrift Shoppers

By JODY PHIPPS

Shepherdstown offers an array of thrift shops and consignment stores that even the thriftiest of shoppers can appreciate.

Thrift shopping has become a growing culture and heightened trend since 2013, and downtown Shepherdstown has a few stores as proof to this, including the recent addition of a Goodwill in May at 83 Maddox Square Dr.

Shepherdstown is known for being an eclectic and diversely cultured town, and the consignment stores here offer designer, new, vintage and handmade merchandise.

A well-known and frequented consignment store located in the heart of town is ReFinements of 123 W. German St. The owner, Judith Platz, secured the downtown property in September 2012. The local business is more of a high-end consignment store with recognizable brands and labels. It features new and gently used items such as clothing, shoes, purses and jewelry. ReFinements even offers select housewares, furniture and art.

Retropolitan is another popular thrift store in Shepherdstown. Owner Sarah Carter opened the store in late September 2012 and is still in business today. The store has something for everyone with unique clothing and jewelry and vintage china and glassware. Retropolitan is at 123 S. Duke St.

Alexandra Kees, a sophomore at Shepherd University, enjoys thrift shopping. Kees said, “I go thrifting mostly at the different Goodwills around the area. With enough digging, you can find a treasure.” Kees said she usually looks for vintage shoes, jewelry and sweaters when she goes thrift shopping.
