Shepherd University softball continued its winning streak today with a pair of road victories over Urbana University.
The Rams won the first game of the day by a score of 9-1. Shepherd started the day strong with seven runs in the first inning against Urbana. Freshman shortstop Debbie Stuart and sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Konopka were both on the board with two RBIs a piece. Sophomores Kelsie Weaver and Connor Gilligan each had an RBI in the inning as well.
Shepherd continued to dominate the game, allowing only one run from Urbana.
Shepherd added to their lead in the fourth inning with RBIs from sophomore Ariana Ramirez and senior Paige Buckworth. The sole Urbana run was batted in by Mykee Holtz. Shepherd’s sophomore pitcher Lori Sturgill earned the win in the blowout.
The Rams won the second contest of the day by a score of 10-1, but started out at a much slower pace. The game remained scoreless until the third inning when Urbana’s Margo Jackson batted a run in.
Shepherd answered strongly, scoring a whopping 10 runs in the fourth inning. Senior Alexandra Witt had three RBIs, junior Molly Staley and sophomore Kaitlyn Konopka each had two RBIs, while sophomores Connor Gilligan and Morgan Cox had single RBIs. Senior pitcher Tara Hanson earned the win for the second of the day’s doubleheader.
The keys for Shepherd today were outstanding pitching, allowing a combined two runs in two games, and capitalizing on opportunities, scoring 19 runs on only 21 hits.
Shepherd continues next week with an away game on March 29 against Fairmont State University in Fairmont, WV and a home game against Wheeling Jesuit University on April 1.
