Shepherd volleyball splits the weekend

(THE PICKET) – The Rams volleyball team played Wheeling Jesuit University, ranked sixth, on Friday, Oct. 9, and West Liberty University on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Wheeling Jesuit handed Shepherd a 3-0 loss in the Butcher Center. The Cardinals beat the Rams 25-13, 25-9 and 25-11.

Junior outside hitter/right side Grace Simmons recorded six kills for the Rams, while senior outside hitter Taylor Allen and sophomore middle hitter Christine Jackson each had five. Senior outside hitter/libero Samantha Scroggins had nine digs, and freshman defensive specialist Allison Crumling had seven. Freshman setter Cyera Dixon also added 18 assists.

The Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals were led by Kayce Krucki, who had 13 kills, and Courtney Kress, who added 12 digs. Jessica Thobe had a match-high 18 digs.

Shepherd came off Friday’s loss, and taking it to four sets, downed West Liberty 26-24, 25-29, 22-25 and 25-19.

Scroggins recorded 15 kills, nine digs and two aces. Allen added 12 kills and 16 digs for the Rams, and Simmons also had 12 kills. Dixon contributed 47 assists and 11 digs.

Raimey Benson had 13 kills, while Alexis Boyd added 10 kills and 16 digs for the Hilltoppers.

After the weekend, the Rams stand at 9-9 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

The Rams hit the court again Friday, Oct. 16, when they travel to West Virginia State for a 7 p.m. match.
