Rams volleyball team gains 1-1 weekend record

(THE PICKET)—The Shepherd Rams volleyball team played away at West Virginia State on Friday, Oct. 16, and University of Charleston on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The Rams beat out WVS in a 3-0 win and lost to UC 3-2.

Rams gained 25-15, 25-12 and 25-21 victories over WVS. With this win, Shepherd improved to a 10-9 record overall and a 5-2 record in conference play. West Virginia State falls to a 6-11 record overall and a 2-5 record in conference.

Senior outside hitter Taylor Allen posted 11 kills and 16 digs to lead the Rams. Senior outside hitter/libero Samantha Scroggins had nine kills, while senior outside hitter/opposite Anna Roper added five for the Rams. Sophomore libero Kelsey Anderson had a team-best 20 digs, while freshman setter Becca Kern contributed 19 assists.

Edwina Barnett had seven kills and Brooke Cieslewski added 23 digs for the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets.

The Shepherd Rams fought hard against the University of Charleston Golden Eagles, taking it to five sets. Eagles downed the Rams 25-18, 17-25, 25-23, 21-25 and 15-8. With this match, Shepherd fell to a 10-10 record overall, and a 5-3 record in conference play. Charleston improved to a 10-8 record overall and a 6-2 record in conference.

Allen had 11 kills and 16 digs, which led the Rams. Scroggins posted 14 kills and five aces, while freshman middle blocker/right side Sophie Foster added 13. Anderson had a match-high 29 digs, and freshman setter Cyera Dixon contributed 38 assists.

Jordan Wittekind had 17 kills and Shiann White added 20 digs to keep the Golden Eagles going.

The Rams hit the court again on Tuesday, Oct. 20, when they travel to University of Pittsburg at Johnstown for a 7 p.m. match.
