Beyond Comics opens in town

SHEPHERDSTOWN – Down princess street next to H-Mart is the newest addition to Shepherdstown—the Beyond Comics comic book shop. It originally opened on Dec. 23, but the grand opening was celebrated on Saturday, Jan.16.

To celebrate the grand opening, comic book artists, independent game makers and the director of the Blair Witch Project were invited to come to the shop. Many of the comics and games were on sale as part of the grand opening.

The store manager, DC Cathro, said the reason for opening up a shop in Shepherdstown was the untapped market. “We can tap into Martinsburg and Charles Town, not just Shepherdstown.”

Cathro added that, with the university right around the corner, Beyond Comics is perfectly placed to get business not only from Shepherd University but from the surrounding town as well.

The original Beyond Comics store opened almost 20 years ago in Frederick, Md. Several years later, a second shop was opened in Gaithersburg. The new store in Shepherdstown is the third comic shop under the name of Beyond Comics, and it is the only comic shop in the Shepherdstown and Martinsburg area.

The shop sells the latest comics from Batman and Superman, but it also offers lesser known comic book options like Fables, Hellboy and Preacher.

On top of that, the store also has vintage comics in collectable condition on the walls and older comics in boxes on display, as well as collectable figures and action figures.

Also, they have a sizable amount of board and card games for sale. They have all the popular games like Risk and the popular Cards against Humanity. It offers independent games like Small World and a zombie-based card game called Badass Zombie Killers as well.

Beyond Comics is located at 207 Princess St., and it is from open from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. The staff is friendly, and it provides not only comics but also space for gaming and card games.
